Six questions to ask before you pick a business loan lender

These work on any lender, including us.

Who will actually fund you?

Some companies lend their own money, some issue through a partner bank, and some are marketplaces that pass you to a lender. Ask who the lender is on your agreement, and who you'll deal with after funding. FundBetter is a lender and funding marketplace, so we may connect you with vetted third-party lenders and funding partners, and you work through one advisor either way.

Is the minimum a real floor, and for which product?

A published minimum might be a hard floor, a description of typical customers, or the lowest bar anywhere in a network. Ask which it is, and for the product you actually need. As a general starting point we work with businesses at around 500 credit, six months in business and about $15K a month. Some products have stricter bars, such as 700 for long-term business loans and one year for equipment financing.

What will the money cost, in dollars?

APRs, factor rates and "as low as" rates don't compare directly, and a merchant cash advance or revenue-based financing offer may not quote an APR at all. Ask for the total you'd repay, how often payments come out, and every fee. You can test any quote with our business loan calculator.

What does fast actually mean?

Lenders quote their fastest case, and it often depends on a cutoff time, your documents or your bank. Ask what has to happen for you to get funds that quickly. Our fastest case is 24 hours, and invoice factoring takes 24 to 48 hours. If you can wait, SBA loans carry our longest terms.

What happens if you pay it off early?

On many short-term business loans paying early saves money, and on others the full cost is owed regardless. On a business line of credit you pay interest on what you draw. Ask how much you'd save by paying off halfway, in dollars, before you sign.

Will checking your options affect your credit?

All four companies we compare here say checking your options won't affect your score. Ask when a hard inquiry happens. With us it only happens later, with your permission, if you move forward with certain offers.

Frequently asked questions about comparing lenders

How do you check the facts on these comparisons?

Every competitor fact comes from that company's own website, on the date shown. We don't use review sites or another lender's description of them. Anything a company doesn't publish is marked "Not published". If you spot something that has changed, tell us and we'll re-check it.

Which is the best business loan lender?

It depends on your credit, your revenue, how long you've been open and what the money is for. A business that meets a strict minimum may get a better price from a lender with a higher bar. These comparisons show where each company is the stronger fit, including where that isn't us.

What is the difference between a direct lender and a marketplace?

A direct lender funds you itself. A marketplace connects you with other lenders. Some companies do both. FundBetter is a lender and funding marketplace, Lendio is a marketplace, and OnDeck describes itself as working with you directly.

Do these companies pay to be listed?

No. We're not affiliated with the companies we compare, and they don't pay to appear here. We're a competitor, so read our comparisons with that in mind and check the sources we link.

What credit score do I need for a business loan?

It varies widely by lender and product. OnDeck and Bluevine publish a 625 minimum, National Funding says it has no hard minimum, and FundBetter's general starting point is around 500, with higher bars on some products.

Checking your options takes a couple of minutes and won't affect your credit score.
